I apologize in advance for this small rant. I’m tired of craft breweries pimping the reinheitsgebot like it makes them a better brewery for adhering to it, or that it makes one of their beers magically better because there’s nothing but hops, barley, and water in it. I don’t care. What makes craft breweries great is that they are able to push the envelope, to blur the lines. You know what beers adhere to the Bavarian Purity Law? Bud, Miller, and Coors (among many, many others). It doesn’t make a beer bad because it follows the law, but it doesn’t make it better just because it does. Put fruit in your beer, brew it with spices, use wheat, we all love pumpkin beers. The last beer I made was a stout with whiskey, espresso, vanilla, and cocoa.
Be fearless.
