Beer Review – The Bruery: Mischief

Never made it to The Bruery during my stint in California…another reason to go back!  Out of Placentia, CA, Mischief is a Belgian Golden Strong Ale. Have a glass ready when you open this one because it is very highly carbonated, which is appropriate for the style, however I think it was overdone a little much.  It’s one thing to highly carbonate a beer, another to have a beer where after an inch of liquid is poured, the head fills the rest of the glass.

Appearance:  After the carbonation panic and the beer is in an appropriate glass, you’ll notice a thick, rocky head.  The color of the beer is golden and cloudy as is typical for a Belgian Ale. 2/3

Aroma:  The aroma is fruity and malty, but with no noticeable hop aroma even though the website says this is dry hopped.  I live in WI and picked this up at my local grocery store and with no way of knowing when mine was bottled, the lack of hop in the aroma is forgivable as this dissipates quickly.  The aroma of this beer would make you think it’s a traditional Belgian Ale. 10/12

Flavor:  There is a slight hop bitterness at the end which compliments the maltiness well.  A slight hotness combines nicely with the malt as well to remind you that this is a strong ale.  No flavor dominates this brew.  The malt, hops, and hotness all combine to raise the bar and yet compliment each other very well. 18/20

Mouthfeel:  This brew has a medium to medium high body with a slight warmth.  After letting the head calm a bit, the carbonation is medium to medium low, another reason I feel this beer was overcarbonated.  The carbonation was so high that by the time you’re actually able to drink it, most has left and it is no longer a highly carbonated beer.  4/5

Overall Impression:  This was a big, but not overly dominating Belgian Ale.  A great beer that hits most of the marks across the board.  It has just enough warmth to remind you that this is a relatively big beer but not enough to offend you.  I would have no problem cracking open another one of these!  Total: 43/50

A Great Debate

‘Tis the holiday season, and with that comes the increasingly popular beer gift.  The gift of beer is foolproof when the recipient is a craft beer fan…give them something new and it really doesn’t matter if it’s good or not, we want to try them all.  The problem occurs when we’re talking about giving the gift of beer to the beer dumb.  What beer do you choose for the poor, unfortunate, fool who only drinks Bud?  You wouldn’t give crack to a crackhead so you’re not going to give Bud to someone who doesn’t know any better than to only drink Bud.  This seems like an easy answer, you just find a craft brewed American lager or some other light beer and ease them toward the light, right?  That seems logical, however, I offer the counter point that I was shown the light by experiencing the polar opposite of a light lager…a stout.  I had no idea that a beer could have…gasp…flavor!  Break down their beer barriers by completely taking them out of their comfort zone.  A lot of the beer dumb are just too lazy to search out real beer, so in a broad sense this is a war we cannot win, but we must try.  I don’t know what the answer to this riddle is, but it’s something I think about every time I’ve asked to give a beer recommendation.

Reinheitsgebot Rant

I apologize in advance for this small rant.  I’m tired of craft breweries pimping the reinheitsgebot like it makes them a better brewery for adhering to it, or that it makes one of their beers magically better because there’s nothing but hops, barley, and water in it.  I don’t care.  What makes craft breweries great is that they are able to push the envelope, to blur the lines.  You know what beers adhere to the Bavarian Purity Law?  Bud, Miller, and Coors (among many, many others).  It doesn’t make a beer bad because it follows the law, but it doesn’t make it better just because it does.  Put fruit in your beer, brew it with spices, use wheat, we all love pumpkin beers.  The last beer I made was a stout with whiskey, espresso, vanilla, and cocoa.

Be fearless.

21st Century Postal Service Act

I found a story in the BeerStreetJournal talking about a proposal to allow shipments of beer and win via the USPS.  It’s a fantastic idea and would actually give them a leg up on UPS and FedEx.  In the BSJ story, they claim that you can legally ship beer via UPS and FedEx but that’s not actually true…it’s more of a don’t ask/don’t tell and you won’t go to prison if they find out.  With the growing craft beer industry and the limited distribution of each brewery, there’s the potential for something like an online craft beer sharing website.  We can bring beer and wine on planes and cross state borders with it…it’s time the USPS joined us all in the 21st Century.  21st Century Postal Service Act

William Busch’s New Venture: Kraftig

I found this bit of information this past weekend while reading a brewing newspaper while waiting for the Summit Brewery tour to begin.  My initial reaction was, “Another German lager?  Do you know how to make anything else?!”  But what I failed to recognize is that the Busch family no longer owns the company as it was bought out by InBev a few years back…I can’t say I know definitively what, if any, influence they still have…but this is my understanding.  I’m at a loss for words when I take a step back and read between the lines of this story and see that William K Busch, son of August Busch Jr…financially set up for life…ventures out and starts his own brewery…not to unleash a creative desire that would not have been welcomed at A-B…but to make another German lager.  Way to think outside the box with your new venture.

The Future of Craft Beer – Tenth and Blake

Great article written by BeerNews.org.  What I do like about the MillerCoors craft beer division is that they don’t throw it in your face that the beer is made by them.  Everyone knows that Blue Moon is a Coors beer but they atleast have the decency to not slap their logo and branding on it, e.g. AB’s American Ale.  I have no problem with craft beer created on a large scale as long as you know who your audience is.  There are a lot of craft beer enthusiasts these days, but there are also even more (and likely always will be) beer dumb people.  Give the beer dumb their light lagers and leave them alone, quit trying to force convert them.  Living in the heart of Leinenkugel country, I’m very excited for their Big Eddy series.  Imperial IPA, Scotch Ale, and a Porter?  Sign me up!  Click the image to check out the article in its entirety.

Girly Beer

Women aren’t stupid.  They don’t choose their drinks based on the “girliness.”  This is identical to the Dr. Pepper 10 ad campaign right now where they state the drink is “not for women.”  Why alienate a market segment?  Are you not good enough to create a drink that both men and women alike can enjoy?  Much like how I will not try a beer based on the fact that it’s made by Anheuser-Busch, women who don’t like beer are not going to try a beer just because an ad campaign tells them they’ll like this one…even though they dislike all the others.  This will fail…I’d say good try, but it really wasn’t.
